Let the FUN begin!
65+ Daily Activities, Weekly Special Events, Camp Trips, Inter-Camp Games and an Awesome Evening Activity every night of the summer!
Since 1957 Camp Lohikan has been owned and operated by the Buynak Family. For 53 summers the Buynak Family and Camp Lohikan's dedicated staff have provided campers with a safe, caring environment to make new friends, professional instruction to learn new skills and sharpen old ones, and a friendly camp atmosphere where FUN happens all the time!
We have a great summer planned for 2010 and we invite you to join us in the FUN!
JUNIOR PROGRAM (age 9 and younger) – STRUCTURED: Junior campers travel as a cabin group with their cabin counselor to activities designed for their age group. Certain activity sites offer electives which allow the juniors choice in their programming while still maintaining cabin counselor supervision. Counselors for junior cabins are specially chosen for their experience and ability to work with younger campers.
INTER/SENIOR PROGRAM (age 10 and older) – INDIVIDUALIZED: Older campers get to choose all of their activities at Lohikan. Activities are chosen on a weekly basis and adjusted daily. It’s individualized scheduling at its finest! You can adjust your schedule to travel with friends or specialize in as many activities as you want. The choice is yours! And your activity choices are guaranteed! EVERY DAY!
Regardless of age or program format, particular attention is paid to camper supervision and safety throughout the day. Program activities are instructed with appropriate emphasis on skill development and FUN!
FIRST-TIME CAMPER PROGRAM: First-time campers are our specialty! We have a comprehensive program (before, during, and after the camp season) designed to make the first-time camp experience an easy and successful endeavor. We even offer first-time camping families a Great Camp Guarantee which provides for a tuition refund if the camper leaves camp early. Risk free camping is here!
TEEN PROGRAM: The individualized format of our daily program is ideal for teens. In addition to the free choice program format, activities are coed for teenagers. Evening activities and special events are operated by division. Senior division events are geared for our oldest campers like: Senior Beach Parties, DJ Disco Extravaganzas, Senior Socials, Senior Trips, Senior Tiki Bivouac, Senior Snack Bar & Game Room, Senior Experiment Week, Lohikan’s Camp-A-Palooza Concerts, and lots more! Teenagers who age out of the program can continue their camp experiences by joining Lohikan's Junior Staff Mentoring Program. Participants in the Leadership Training Program are guaranteed a counselor staff position at camp after 2 summers of leadership training. That’s summer job security!
ARTS PROGRAMS
PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM: Lohikan's Theatre, Dance and Music Departments offer campers a rich and varied Performing Arts Program. Three professional directors head each of the departments and are supported by a talented staff of experienced specialty instructors who have worked with children and have special training in the area of their expertise.
THEATRE PROGRAM: The Theatre Program provides campers with professional training in acting techniques with the use of monologues, pantomime, improvisation, scenes and plays. The Musical Theater Program concentrates on song delivery, movement, music, dancing and acting skills. Tech Theatre classes cover costuming, make-up, set design and construction, lighting design and sound engineering. Campers who elect to participate in one of the camp’s theatrical performances receive instruction on a daily basis. Four quality theatrical performances are produced every summer and every camper with desire and dedication is guaranteed an opportunity to perform.
In addition to our theatrical performances, campers with acting, singing and musical interests are given the opportunity to perform on stage in front of the entire camp every week of the summer as part of Lohikan’s “Campfire Showcase Series”.
DANCE PROGRAM: Lohikan’s Dance Program features daily instructional classes in: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Choreography, and Aerobics. Each camper is personally evaluated and placed in a group with other dancers of similar age and ability. Beginner through advanced instruction is available in all dance styles. Classes focus upon teaching and practicing technique, movement, improvisation and choreography and are conducted in our fully equipped, air-conditioned dance studio (floor to ceiling mirrors, bars, lights, Rosco dance floor).
Dance Recitals are scheduled every two weeks and every dancer is given an opportunity to perform. In addition to our dance recitals, campers are encouraged to perform on stage during our weekly “Campfire Showcase Series” evening activities.
MUSIC PROGRAM: Music is in the air all summer long at Camp Lohikan! Our Music Program operates on a daily basis and includes beginner to advanced instruction in guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and vocals. Specialty instructors teach the fundamentals to beginners and work on technique and perfecting the skills of our more advanced campers. Instruction is provided in small groups. Private lessons are also available. Camper musicians and singers have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the summer including our weekly “Campfire Showcase Series”, July & August Talent Shows, Skit Nights, Lohikan Idol... and let's not forget the Camp-A-Palooza Concerts!
ROCK BAND PROGRAM: A very popular department in Lohikan's Music Program is the Rock Band Program. Whether you’re a beginner or accomplished musician we’ve got a band for you! Campers participating in the Rock Band Program are grouped with other campers based upon age, ability and musical interest. One-on-one and small group instruction in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals is provided by specialty instructors.
The program is designed for beginners as well as kids who already play guitar, bass, drums or keyboards. Campers can spend all day in the music department and get really good in a short period of time, or campers can spend time enjoying everything else in camp and progress at their own speed. Every activity in camp is elective. It’s individualized programming at its finest!
In Rock Band campers work with the specialty staff on original music as well as classic rock tunes. Each band is assigned a producer who prepares the band for its debut performance. After a week of instruction, rehearsals and teamwork, the band takes the stage and performs a set in one of Lohikan’s weekly Camp-A-Palooza concerts. They're awesome!
The entire camp is in attendance for the concerts. As curtain time approaches the excitement builds and the camper audience can be heard yelling out encouraging cheers for their bunkmates! Then the bands hit the stage, one by one playing their favorite tunes and rockin' the camp! It's a lot of fun to watch but it's even more fun to be on stage and perform in front of a live audience. The applause is unforgettable!
CIRCUS ARTS: Circus is a huge program that’s very popular with our campers. The Circus Program operates every day of the summer and campers receive instruction from circus professionals in over 20 different circus acts: Flying Trapeze, Rolling Globe, Lyra (Aerial Hoops), Spanish Web, Silks, Acrobatics, Unicycle, Rolla Bolla, Devil Sticks, Circus Bike, Hand-Balancing, Juggling, Clowning, Tight Wire, Fire Eating, Diabolo, Magic, Stilts, and Single/Double/Triple Trapeze. Two circus performances are scheduled on each of our Visiting Days to showcase the skills of our camper performers and everyone is invited to perform. The parents and kids love it!
CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM: The Creative Arts Department is one of our most popular departments in camp. Three professional artists direct the program with the assistance of 14 specialty instructors. Workshops include:
Ceramics & Pottery – It’s all about sculpting, glazing, firing clay and throwing pots. Seven wheels, 2 kilns and more than 6000 lbs of clay keeps our campers pretty busy!
Paper-Making – Campers make their own special greeting cards, stationery, posters and pretty awesome art work!
Leather Craft – Punching, stamping, dyeing, stitching and leather design classes are featured in the Leather Craft Activity. Belts, purses, and key chains are just a few of the projects campers create and personalize.
T-Shirt Factory – This is one of the most popular workshops in the Creative Arts Department. Campers learn Silk Screening Techniques and sometimes create special t-shirts for their cabin group or special events like “Rock Band”. Tie Dyeing is also popular and the t-shirts the campers produce would make Jerry Garcia proud! Batiking and Fabric Painting are also part of the T-Shirt Factory curriculum and campers produce everything from fancy covered pillows to designer headwear. It’s all good!
Painting & Drawing – Staff artists teach campers a variety of painting techniques using acrylic paints and canvass. Classes in water color painting, charcoal and pencil drawing are also conducted. All artwork is put on display in the Creative Arts Center during our July and August Parent Visiting Days. It’s a great art show!
Stained Glass – In this workshop campers design and solder their own stained glass projects with the help of our specialty instructors.
Arts & Crafts – The activities featured in the Arts and Crafts Workshop change every week. Classes include: Air Brush, Macrame, Fimo Jewelry, Basket Weaving, Lanyards, Braiding, Weaving, Papier Mache, Enameling, Nature Crafts, Block Printing, Puppetry, Needle Craft, Mask Making, Bead Craft, Plaster Projects, Decoupage, String Art, Nature Crafts, Cartooning, Calligraphy and lots more!
Model Building Rocketry – Campers design, build and launch Estes brand and custom model rockets.
Stage Craft – Interested campers can help design and construct sets for camp drama productions and evening activities in the Stage Craft Workshop.
Woodworking – Our Woodworking Studio is fully equipped and ready to undertake the wildest of projects! Campers have made everything from mail boxes and clocks to napkin holders and leather-seated chairs with the help of our instructors! Campers are only limited by their imagination and our supply of wood!
Photography – Campers are provided 35mm cameras and black & white film and taught the basics of photography by specialty instructors. After the film is shot it’s developed by the campers and black & white prints are produced and later put on display for our Parent’s Visiting Days Shows.
MORE ARTS: In addition to the Performing Arts Program, there’s even more arts activities available for our camper artists and performers…
VIDEO PRODUCTION (Media Arts): The popularity of Lohikan’s Video Production Program has exploded with the advent of digital camcorders, digital editing software, powerful computers and the availability of talented staff instructors. Now, campers write, shoot, edit and produce their own video shows in camp! And they’re really good!!! Campers have produced music videos, comedy acts, broadcast news shows, and more. What’s great is that our dining hall is equipped with a high powered video projector which is used during meal times so everyone gets to screen the latest camper video work of art! A star is born every meal at Camp Lohikan!

Other clinics feature programs and activities (skill development) not offered in the camp's daily activity line-up. In addition to building special skills and self-confidence and just being fun, the Clinics Program adds diversity to the summer camp program and are very popular with many of our campers. CAMP MISSION: Our mission is to provide the staff, the program and the caring, supportive camp environment that will enhance the camper's artistic, athletic and social skills and, with positive encouragement and reinforcement, develop in the camper a greater sense of self-esteem and self-confidence.
CAMP STAFF: When it comes down to it, camp staff is what a successful camp is all about. A great camp experience is only possible with great camp staff. This is where we shine! Our 50+ senior staff members are adult professionals who assume supervisory responsibilities in camp and at least 90% return every summer. Our in-cabin counselors are college-enrolled staff members. Over 50% return every summer. Ninety percent of our staff are Americans who are recruited from all over the United States for their skills, experience and ability to work with children. All staff members are interviewed, references are contacted and criminal background checks are performed. During our pre-camp orientation period staff members are certified in safety procedures, qualified for instructional responsibilities and trained in providing the supportive, nurturing camp atmosphere that has characterized Camp Lohikan since its beginning.
MEDICAL STAFF: A camp physician is in residence the entire summer. In addition to the camp doctor, 5 registered nurses and 3 assistants staff the camp health center which is open 24 hours a day. Our 53 year safety record is impeccable.
